Hi Peter,
Thanks for the article. This field is one of those subjects where it isn't difficult, but it isn't easy either and care needs to be taken not to fall for simple misunderstandings.

I hope I'll get my head around it soon!!

Hi Masuda.

Thanks for you feedback.

You can also get an idea of commercial intent by looking at the CPC and Adwords competition. If the CPC is over $1 and the Adwords competition is medium or high, then that's generally a good indication of good commercial intent, otherwise advertisers wouldn't be spending their money on ads for those keywords.

Cheers

Peter

I have been searching through forums and websites to find out how Google Kw Tools works since yesterday. Your article is the most clear explanation that shows difference between broad search and exact search. Examples about them just make terms easy. Also, I realized that commercial intent is also important.
Here is my way for commercial intent test.
1. find keyword with Google KW
2. google it
3. look out if there are ads on the right side of searching page.
4. more ads, more commercial intent.
Thanks a lot Peter!

Hi Peter.

Thanks for the SECockpit discount. I'd been considering getting a subscription for a while now as I've seen so many people raving about SECockpit, but the full monthly price put me off.

Thanks

Hi Nick.

If you are referring to Jeff Johnson's "Free Traffic Getting SEO Plugin", then it is quite different to Easy WP SEO.

As I understand it, Jeff Johnson's plugin is essentially a plugin that bundles various popular plugins along with their configuration. It isn't specifically for SEO, but the plugins that it includes can help with SEO.

Cheers

You are correct that NF (like most keyword research tools) uses Google Adwords Keyword Tool, but it is incorrect to say it won't find long tail keywords. GAKT can return over 800 related keywords, of which quite a few will be long tail.
That said, it's true there are other sources to get keywords that GAKT won't give you, eg: Google suggest.

As for the competition analysis in NF, I don't know the exact formula it uses, but I'm pretty sure it uses a variety of factors including Majestic SEO data.

If you are wanting to see a full top 10 competition analysis, then your choices generally come down to:

1. SECockpit (which is my preferred keyword research tool)
2. Traffic Travis (Even the free version gives you top10 result analysis)
3. Market Samurai (which I personally don't like as I find it has a horrible interface and is very slow)

Keep in mind, that when I do keyword research, I generally cross check using at least 2 keyword research tools/methods. If they all broadly agree, then I can be reasonably confident that the keyword is a good one to target.

Cheers

I bought Niche Finder. And like most other keyword tools i can not recommend it. First it is solely based on googles adword keywordtool and won't find long tail keywords which are not to find way faster directly with adwords.

Second the competition analyzis is worthless, like with all the other keyword tools! based on what? All in title Google searches? Everbody which is doing active SEO knowing that to get on the second page or low first page google results is easy, doesent matter which keyword and how many websites are indexed. But to get a top ranking in the first 5 is another pair of shoes. I am really missing a competition analyzer which has the the focus on TOP 10, giving me backlinks, authority pages, anchors and so on... and let me set my own rules for giving green, orange or red!

Is such a tool allready out? give me you'r affiliate link and will buy it immediatly :-)

regards

Open site explorer have only today started limiting their free results even more. Blekko seems like the next contender and the free alternative.

I don't know what yahoo didn't keep their site explorer and start charging the stupid amounts of money some are charging for it.

What I want is a service that has a full api but does cost $250 a month. I may of stretched to $99 a month.
